Sir Thomas Becket was born on the 21st December 1118 in Cheapside London. He was the son of a merchant called Gilbert of Thierceville. He was a well educated and soon grew up to be an agent for Theobald who was the current Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry II took notice of this and then made Becket his chancellor. The two of them soon became very good friends. Henry II was very annoyed at the church because of some of the things that they were doing. Henry II thought of the idea that if Becket would become the next Archbishop of Canterbury then he can tell Becket what's wrong with the church and so he thinks that Becket can change that because he is Archbishop of Canterbury however, Becket did not approve of this he didn't wan't anything to get between his friendship. Although Becket told all this to Henry II, he did not care. So after Theobald died Henry II appointed Becket to become Archbishop and that is what happened. Becket became Archbishop and started to become very pious towards his job. Henry II had told Becket to change a rule that from now on all court cases will now be held in the King's court not the churches. At first Becket agreed to this however he then changed his mind. This made Henry II very angry so then he said 'who will rid me of this troublesome priest?' When Henry II said this four barons misheard him and went to Canterbury Cathedral probably to arrest him however in the end, they killed him. He then died on the 29th December 1170. When he died everybody in the church then realised that Thomas Becket was a Marta because he had died for his religion so his shrine remains at Canterbury Cathedral.
